A day in the life of Logistics Co-ordinator Delyth Barton

My day can normally begin one of two ways. If things are going to plan I’ll get up on the first buzz of my alarm, have time to eat my breakfast in peace and then get the kids ready for nursery and be in work with time to spare. A not so good day, would see a wake-up call from my two-year old jumping on the bed asking for milk and biscuits, followed by a refusal to get dressed and an argument with his younger sister on the way to nursery.

I usually make it to work between 8.30 and 9, if I’m lucky I’ll have a coffee waiting for me on my desk if I’m not I’ll have to make coffee for the whole office. Once I’ve got my caffeine hit, logged onto the computer and opened my email, my first real task is to deal with the parts that engineers leave on customer sites for collection, passing the work between our London-based courier and TNT. I then may have to catch-up on any issues from the day before and discuss what stock is going to be counted that day with Darren, our stock controller. We undertake daily stock counts and I’m tasked with updating the stock system and reporting the results. I do enjoy working through the problems trying to find the appropriate solution.

As a logistics co-ordinator my biggest responsibility is to issue, administrate and chase Field Service Engineer audits. Usually I try to issue them on a Monday and update our computer system, Navision with the results as and when the replies arrive. I also audit our forward stock locations to make sure our stock systems match. If there are any discrepancies these are often investigated and then normally resolved.

I like to either meet my husband for lunch or have a quiet half an hour without phones, kids or audits. I normally have two pain points throughout the day The first comes at lunchtime when the staff in the office halves and all the phones are ringing, the second usually occurs mid to late afternoon when I’m trying to get things finished for the day and more stock counts land on my desk.

My day usually finishes at 5pm, with me trying to find a point where I can leave work for the day and be able to resume it in the morning. I look forward to seeing my kids at the end of the day. However, this feeling can disappear fairly quickly if I’m told they’ve been up to no good! I do love hearing about the ‘good’ things they do and love receiving big smiling faces when they see me.
